What critics say About KAMLI ?

K N T Sastry, is an Indian film critic turned filmmaker. After a two decades of working experience in the field of film criticism, he turned to filmmaking with the award winning “Surabhi” – a documentary on nomadic theatre group of South India. His documentary “Harvesting Girl Babies” funded by Jan Vrijman Fund of Amsterdam, received critical attention at the IDFA, while all his documentaries have received critical attention. His debut feature film “The Rite .. a Passion”, (:Tiladaanam:) received the Indira Gandhi Award – Swarna Kamal – for best debut feature, as well as New Currents Award at the 7th Pusan International film Festival in S Korea. The film has travelled wide.

Kamli is his second feature film.

Nandita Das
Acclaimed Indian actress Nandita Das has developed an international reputation for being extremely selective in the roles she chooses to play. Nandita is known to world audiences for her critically acclaimed performances in the films Fire, Earth (both directed by Deepa Mehta), Bawander (directed by Jagmohan Mundhra) and Kannathilmutha Mitttal (directed by Mani Rathnam). She has performed in over 25 feature films, many of which have been showcased in numerous international film festivals. She won the Best Actress award for her performance in the film “Bawander” at the Santa Monica Film Festival (2001). Her compelling acting as a rape victim in this film got her accolades from critics and audiences worldwide. She also won the Best Actress award for her stellar performance in “Amar Bhuvan” (directed by Mrinal Sen) at the Cairo Film Festival (2002).

Known to never shy away from a controversial issue or an unconventional role, Nandita Das has attracted the attention of artists, critics and film lovers across the globe. She firmly believes that as films have such a mass appeal, they can be used as a powerful instrument for social change. Her passion and commitment comes from her background as a social activist, who has continuously supported Human Rights’ issues and rights for women and children in particular. She holds a Masters degree in Social work and her involvement in social issues was first as an active member of a street theatre group, Jan Natya Manch, and thereafter through her work with various NGOs. She is also a board member of the Alliance of a New Humanity, which is headed by Deepak Chopra and was founded by Nobel Laureates like Oscar Arias and Betty Williams and other eminent people.

She has also directed four public service short films for Civil Society Organizations. These films were produced by Leapfrog, a socio-communication organization. Nandita’s been a featured speaker at various universities and social forums, both in India and abroad. She had the honour of being part of the main jury at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in May 2005.

She’s the daughter of noted painter-father Jatin Das and accomplished writer-mother Varsha Das.

Sunny Joseph
Sunny Joseph is a cinematographer, editor, script writer and Director. He worked as a cinematographer in more than thirty feature films in eight languages, worked as a director in more than ten short films and two TV serials. He also worked as script writer and editor in more than six short films. Currently functions as the General Secretary of Indian Society of Cinematographers and as a member, Kerala Chalachtra Academy. He does workshops with students of Film and Television Institute of India, Pune and Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Calcutta. He was an observer in Krzysztof Zanussi's film "LIFE AS A FATAL SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE".
